Do I choose my plumber?

Yes. Feel free to contact your regular plumber, search around online or ask some friends which plumbers they use. If you have any gas connections that need to be plumbed up, you will need to hire a certified gas fitter. Only some plumbers also have their gas certification, so be sure to ask when contacting them.

What should I be asking my plumber when I have them quote?

  • Firstly, are they a licensed plumber? There are many handymen who will do plumbing, but you will be required by law to have any plumbing connected by a licensed plumber. It is a requirement by law that any plumbing connections and installations are to be completed by a licensed plumber/drainer/gasfitter.
  • Get three quotes when looking around for a plumber or gasfitter to carry out these works.
  • Ask for a breakdown of the quote when they send it to you (labour & materials)
  • Will a septic tank need to be installed, or will the VanHome be able to connect to a sewerage line? In NSW, if you are required to have a septic tank installed, that will require council approval.
  • Will there be digging involved, or will they be planning on installing a pump? This will give you an idea of whether the costs will be associated more with materials or labour.

What does my plumber need to know about my VanHome?

  • We don't recommend underground pipework before the VanHome has been installed. This is due to the weight of the VanHome and the risk of crushing those pipes.
  • Whether your VanHome is running on gas or electric water system and if your appliances are gas or electric too.
  • All waste points sit 100mm under the floorboards of the VanHome yet are not connected due to transport. They will have to connect all waste points via a suspended drainage system, including a vent.
  • The water inlet is installed to be connected via a garden hose. However, it can be hard connected to increase water pressure (via copper or poly pipes).

Do you have a ballpark of what I should pay for a plumber?

The average cost for the plumbing of your VanHome should be somewhere in the $3,000 - $6,000 range. These rates will differ depending on a range of factors. Additional costs can be associated with extensive excavations, availability of water sources, and distance to services (remote location, septic, electrical, gas, potable water & communications).
